This phenomenon serves as a stark reminder that our world remains woefully unprepared for the consequences of human actions – or inactions.

A disconnect exists between the scientific community’s understanding of these problems and the public health sector’s response. The World Health Organization convened an expert panel after COVID-19, but their report barely addressed the critical issue of wildlife-borne diseases. This lack of attention is puzzling, given that infectious disease experts have been warning about spillover – where diseases jump from animals to humans – for years.

The majority of emerging infectious diseases in humans originated in animals, including most pandemics since 1918. Research suggests that Ebola likely began with an axe-wielding community clearing forests in rural Guinea, unleashing a virus that had been living among bats. Similarly, hantavirus is linked to deforestation and climate change, illustrating how human choices contribute to these outbreaks.

Habitat destruction, industrial farming facilities, and the commercial wildlife trade increase the likelihood of spillovers. Climate change exacerbates this issue by altering transmission dynamics and making it harder to contain outbreaks. Statistics are sobering: there’s a one-in-five chance that another pandemic will occur in the next decade, killing at least 25 million people.

Medical schools often neglect to teach students about ecology, agricultural policy, and veterinary science, leaving future physicians ill-equipped to deal with these complex issues. The public health sector is also culpable, as organizations like the WHO fail to prioritize spillover prevention in their reports.

The stalled pandemic treaty adopted last year by the WHO aimed to address spillover prevention and equitable sharing of pathogen samples, vaccines, and medicines between richer and poorer countries. However, negotiators failed to agree on critical details – just as they did with COVID-19’s early days.

Halting deforestation can dramatically reduce the odds of spillovers. The World Wildlife Fund warns that we’re tragically far off track from reaching the international goal of ending deforestation by 2030. Addressing this issue requires a fundamental shift in how we approach resource extraction, industrial farming, and wildlife trade.

We need to acknowledge that our world is still not prepared to deal with spillover outbreaks. Prioritizing prevention over containment, investing in research and development of treatments, and addressing the underlying causes of these outbreaks are essential steps towards averting another pandemic. The clock is ticking; it’s time for us to act before we’re caught off guard once again.
